This week, our Ratner family, all our Stylists, and the entire beauty industry felt the loss when industry giant Vidal Sassoon died at age 84. Vidal singlehandedly revolutionized the beauty industry, and the changes he made inspired us and opened the door for our success with our own Hair Cuttery business concept.

Vidal forever changed the industry by replacing the shampoo-and-set business with unisex, precision hair-cutting. He was an icon in the 70s styling celebrities like Mia Farrow, and became a household name when he launched his own successful line of products. He remained a powerful force in the industry through the end of his life, and his memory will forever be in the hearts and minds of Stylists everywhere.

We owe this great man a personal debt of gratitude. His incredible vision and accomplishments motivated us to capture the value market and become the unique, caring company of salon brands we are today. Vidal shared our vision and rallied the industry to benefit the people throughout his life.

A humanitarian after our own hearts, Vidal spearheaded the Hairdressers Unlocking Hope campaign in 2007. We joined forces with him to rebuild houses following the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina, and are proud that together we provided more than just homes – we provided renewed hope to people affected by the tragedy.

Vidal, your legacy will never die and you live on in our hearts. Thank you, and rest in peace.

Around this time of year, teen girls everywhere are getting prepped for one of the most important days of their high school life, PROM! Aside from the dress picking and shoe buying, they are searching for the perfect hairstyle to top off their look. Step One: Section the hair and spray Redken’s Work Force 09 throughout to add texture and hold before we begin to set the hair
Step Two: Using hot rollers*, angle medium sections of hair to wrap around the roller *when using hot rollers, set the entire head and wait for the rollers to cool before removing them
Step Three: After the rollers are removed, take a large paddle brush and run it through the hair to loosen the curls up, this is what creates the WAVE
Step Four: Customize your look by pinning some pieces back, making a side part, or pinning it all to one side
Step Five: Depending on your hair’s ability to hold curl, you can use the following products as a finisher:
• For fine hair that hold no curl- use Redken’s Forceful 23
• For medium/coarse hair that may fall before midnight- use Redken’s Pure Force 16
• For ALL hair types – you can use Redken’s Shine Flash 02 to add shine to the hair, making it look polished

The Quiff
No, we are not talking about the “Snookie poof”…the quiff is a great way to give any ‘do some edge, whether you create an up-do with it or use it to compliment to your blowout.

How to Get the Look:
1. Gather the front section of your hair (extending 3-4 inches across your forehead). You can use a styling paste (like Redken Rewind 06) to mold the hair, or just spray at the end.
2. Slightly twist and quiff up the hair (you can create as much or as little height as you prefer).
3. Pin the front section in place. Use a firm hold hairspray (like Redken Foreceful 23) to keep your hair from falling out.

The Ponytail
The classic pony is being worn from the red carpet to the gym (it’s really THAT versatile!) – here’s a look that will make your everyday ponytail a little bit more elegant.

How to Get the Look:
1. Part your hair in the middle and pull it into a low ponytail at the nape of the neck. If your hair is fine, you can tease it to get volume at the roots, then spray it with hairspray.
2. Loop the ponytail under and secure with an elastic, keeping one small section free. Using your fingers, spread the “looped” hair into a triangular shape.
3. Wrap the loose section of hair around the base of the ponytail to cover the elastic. Pin it in place and spray with hairspray to hold. Try Redken Quick Dry 18 for a firm, no-fuss finish!

The Wet Look Chignon
If you don’t wash your hair everyday, do you constantly find yourself saying, ”Why yes, I just came from the spa and had an oily head massage”, or “How’d you know I just took a swim in the closest body of salt water on my lunch break?”. Great news for you, the wet look is IN!

How to Get the Look:
1. Apply a volumising mousse (try Redken’s Full Frame 07) throughout towel-dried hair and let it dry naturally.
2. For extra volume, flip your damp hair forward and give it a blast of heat from your hairdryer.
3. To get the “wet look”, apply  Cibu Ancient Serum or Cibu Ancient Veil Argan Oil through your dry hair to get a silky, shiny look.
4. Pull your hair back into a low, loose ponytail.
5. Wrap your ponytail into a messy low bun/chignon and secure with bobby pins. Pull a few strands out  if you want to add to the effortless look of the style.
