All Work and No Play Makes Erin a Dull Stylist

One of my favorite things about hair has nothing to do with my job: I love to play with hair. When I was younger, one of my favorite things to do was put on my grandmother’s costume jewelry and play with her hair clips and pins and try to look like a princess.  I was probably about eight years old when I figured out how to bobby pin a rhinestone necklace into my hair so I could have a “crown”. Fast forward a few years and I occupied my time on family road trips by giving my cousin updos in the car with about a dozen bobby pins, two rubber bands and a banana clip. I was always trying new styles and experimenting with ribbons and accessories.

Hair lets me be creative and having fun with hair keeps me good at my profession. As in most professions, it is important to continue to learn about my profession and I’m fortunate that my company, Hair Cuyttery, satisfies this desire with new and advanced classes all the time. As for playing with hair, that’s when it’s less structured than a class but I’m still learning and trying new things. I’ve seen hair styles in magazines and figured out to recreate them or just use the parts I like. I really think this has helped contribute to my success as a Stylist.

I hear clients tell me all the time that their blow dry at home never looks as good as when they leave the salon. I usually joke that’s because I have two arms that I can use anywhere at any angle. The truth is: A) I am trained and have a lot of practice and B) with some practice that same client can do almost as good on their own.  I usually give the client a few tips, suggest a product or two depending on their needs and desired results and suggest practicing. Doing hair is like any other skill, it takes practice, repetition and more practice to get it right consistently. I try get the client excited about trying new things with style, not just cuts and color.

I know these days it seems time is in short supply but it’s important for us to find fun things that make us happy. For me that sometimes means sitting in front of a mirror trying new styles with twist and braids or how to use hot rollers to get the volume I need. Sometimes that means grabbing another Stylist while it is slow and practicing a new updo idea. The idea is I find time to play and practice which is why I ‘m good at what I do. And I know with a little practice many of my clients will be able to achieve those salon looks at home. If not, vist me or any of my talented colleagues at any Hair Cuttery. Believe me, we can help!
