I just attended Hair Cuttery’s WOW Event which is a day dedicated to recognition, fun and relationships. This is an annual event that I absolutely love to attend because I get see so many great people who work for Hair Cuttery, both in other salons and in our home office. I’m a social butterfly and spent the first 30 minutes going from person to person to share a hug and a hello. Unlike many leaders I have been fortunate enough to be involved in a lot of events and functions outside the salon and as a result have met a lot of wonderful people from our home office. I won’t lie, sometimes I get to feel like a rock star because I have made so many friends in the company or I am recognized from my Hair by Erin Facebook Page. I’m all over the place meeting and greeting and catching up, it’s such a fun time!
In this world that is always crazy and busy, especially in the DC area, relationships are important. Think about it, most of your life revolves around the relationships you form, be it at work, at play or with your family. It all boils down to relationships.
In my line of work I get to build and nurture relationships on all levels; with my company, my leader, my fellow leaders, my stylists, my clients and my salons clients in general. Each of these is important in its own way and all contribute to me being a better employee, stylist and person. I am an out going, friendly person so relationships tend to form easily for me and that works well for me.
My favorite days at work are the days I’m booked solid with regulars because it makes work fun. I’ve formed relationships with these clients so I feel like I’m chatting with friends all day long. It also makes my job easier because I know them, I know what they like and dislike and I’m more comfortable making suggestions about products or services. In some ways I can be more frank with a regular client than I can a walk-in client because we HAVE formed a relationship and they know I wouldn’t steer them wrong. I also look forward to those regular clients because I’m eager to learn what’s new in their lives since the last time we visited.
Doing hair is as much about people skills as it is about technical skills. Think about the last time you got a great service, everything was done correctly but there was no flair, nothing personal. Now think about the last time you got a great service, had fun and felt like the stylist “got” you and made sure you were completely happy with your service. Which stylist would you want to return to? If you are like most people you want the second scenario, the great service with the good interaction that makes you feel as good as you look.
Hair Cuttery and Ratner encourage this relationship building between stylist and client through our WOW Service. It is important to us as a company that every client feels like they got the best service every time with a friendly, knowledgeable stylist. I watch my stylists who perform WOW on a daily basis and they are happier at work, perform more services and have formed relationships with those clients. I have had clients on their way out the door tell me they’ve been Suzy Stylists client for 10 years and wouldn’t know what to do with out her. I’ve seen stylists receive cards, gifts, generous holiday tips, birthday cards, exchange recipes, share information and anything else you can think of. These are the stylists that have taken the time to form relationships and take care of those relationships. They are the most successful at what they do and have the happiest clients.
So be it at work, at play or at the family reunion take care of the relationships that make you the happiest. And if you don’t have a regular stylist then you need to find the one for you so you can be the best you and look good too!!
