Fall 2011 Hair Trends

Labor Day has come and gone and Fall will officially arrive in less than 10 days. With cooler weather approaching it’s time to beef up our wardrobes with warmer clothing and footwear appropriate for an Arctic expedition (it’s good to be prepared, right?). A change of seasons is a perfect excuse to update your closet; it’s also the ideal opportunity to try something different with your hairstyle. Here is a list of the top hair trends for Fall 2011 gathered from various sources on the Internet:

1. Keep it Simple (from www.thebudgetfashionista.com)

You don’t need to spend hours doing your hair. You can even go a little wild! thebudgetfashionista.com suggests that you “throw your head over and spray your hair with hairspray. Then, flip your head back and place your hair in a ponytail, letting the strands fall wherever strikes their fancy.”

2. Step away from the curling iron (from www.thehouseofhairct.com)

Whether curly or straight, one Fall/Winter 2011 trend is long, natural hair whether curly or straight. www.thehouseofhairct.com recommends putting away your styling tools and giving your hair a break and even parting your hair in the middle for an easy, effortless look.  Do you have short hair? No problem! Super short hair is also popular this Fall as is the layered bob. The great thing about the bob is that you can choose the more extreme short version or the equally trendy longer version; both are practical and a great fit for virtually any face shape.

3. Ponytails (from p3.totallyliving.co.uk)

Casual can be chic! A new take on the low maintenance ponytail was seen Vera Wang’s models at the New York Fashion Week shows. The result is an entirely new silhouette. Stylist Orlando Pita tells how she fashioned this unique look: “I pulled back the hair and tied it in a loose low ponytail, several inches below the nape of the neck. I pushed the tied section of the ponytail up and over, and then crisscrossed two large bobby pins across the elastic band and pinned to the nape of the neck. This created a beautiful voluminous shape with long, flowing pieces extending down.”

4. Big Updos (from www.collegefashion.net)

A little bit Amy Winehouse and a little bit Mad Men, the updos featured in New York Fashion Week were slightly unkempt and messy.  While runway looks tend to be dramatic, a toned down version is perfect for a night out. www.collegefashion.net recommends keeping the teasing and volume of the updo much less exaggerated. To get the look, they recommend: “First, apply a volumizing spray to damp hair and blow dry upside down or let it air dry. Once your hair is dry, begin backcombing or teasing it backwards until you reach your desired effect. For real life, a reasonable amount of volume is still very flattering without being over-the-top. Then pull your hair back and create a french twist. Use a few bobby pins to secure the twist and finish with just a touch of hair spray.”

What do you think of these looks? Will you be trying any of these or do you have one you’d like to add to the list?
