Completing Your Look: The Eyes Have It

When developing your own look you can’t stop with a hair style.  Though a very important component, hair is only a portion of the story.  Instead, the key to great style is having great hair that complements great skin, nails and wardrobe.  How these elements of your beauty plan play in concert with one another can make up your gorgeous symphony.

If the eyes are truly mirrors to the soul, then you want people to look into yours and see your best self, right?  But they won’t get past your eye shadow if it is caked on, not well-blended and is serving as the enemy of your baby blues (or browns, hazels, greens, etc).  The catch 22 when styling eye makeup is that too much can translate to way too much, and too little can translate to not at all.  Finding the right balance is ideal.  Here are our tips for getting started:

Start off by finding a color palate to highlight your eyes.  For example, don’t choose the same color blue eye shadow as your baby blues.  Instead, try complementary greens, browns and muted colors that are not the similar to the color of your eyes.  They will set your eyes apart.

Choose complementary colors. Try not to use hot pink shadow with a very dissimilar powder blue.  Instead, chose colors that could blend into each other to form a seamless flow of complementary colors.  If you’re wearing pastel blue, go with pastel green as a highlight for example.

Shape and brow care is everything. Before you even begin to use shadow, make sure your eyebrows are in tip top shape.  People will generally scan downward as they look at your eyes, so it is important to arch your eyes before you accentuate them.

Try shadow on for size. Have a makeup date with yourself during which you make yourself try on colors that you would not normally wear.  If your eye shadow is usually daring, try toning it down a little.  If your shadow is usually super natural, take it up a notch.  Find a new balance so that your friends can tell that you’re trying something new.

Where there’s smoke there’s fire.  Smoky eyes always make a statement.  But they cannot be overdone.  Try on a few looks – smoky shadow for evening, shimmery shadow for the holidays, and natural for every day.  You will find that if you’re prepared in advance, you will always know how to achieve your look, and you will be ready to be superfab for any occasion – even spur of the moment ones.
