This holiday season, you are ahead of the curve. You remembered to make an appointment with your favorite stylist to make sure your hair is in tip top shape for the barrage of holiday invites you will get.
When you look in your closet to explore your wardrobe options, however, your excitement wanes. There’s the same old black party dress, same old red sweater and the “same old” just won’t get you through all of your holiday events. And unfortunately, your budget won’t allow you to buy five new holiday party outfits.
What do you do? How about having a little holiday wardrobe swap with your closest friends instead of investing in a brand new wardrobe? Here’s how we suggest you do it:
Weed out the old stuff that you wouldn’t mind loaning – Maybe your favorite black cashmere sweater is just too valuable to you to risk loaning it. But maybe you can do without the black pants you don’t wear that often, or the green sweater that just isn’t your favorite. Make a pile of your least favorite things and see how quickly they get on your friend’s favorite things list.
Identify clothing in your closet that would look perfect with a ____.
So you have a black skirt, but you don’t have that perfect little black tank top to go with it, or the perfect belt to accentuate your waist. In your Evite to your friends, add a note that says: Looking for the perfect holiday belt. If you have one, you get to borrow two items!
Snack and shop – Make your living room, family room or wherever you plan to have your swap look like your own little boutique. Arrange your items in an interesting way – on racks, or draped carefully on furniture, and invite your friends to do the same when they arrive. Also, poll your guests ahead of time to find out what kind of holiday treat they would like to enjoy. Is this the wine and cheese crowd, or the cookies and spiked eggnog crowd for example? Catering to your audience ahead of time and mentioning this in your invite may boost attendance.
Set up boundaries for borrowing – Have everyone bring a list of the items they are contributing to the clothing swap and note who is responsible for them. Also, make a master list for your guests so that everyone is in the know. That way, there will be less confusion when the items are returned.
Wear with care – Advise guests that this only works if they remember to wear the items with the utmost care and agree to fix or replace anything they borrowed if it gets damaged.
Set up a Swap Return – Set a date at the initial Holiday Swap party for a Re-swap to return the items. You could also have a little fun if everyone takes pictures of themselves in at their favorite holiday events so that you can show your friend Jane the holiday belt you borrowed from her helped make you the belle of the ball!
