Nail Care for Cold Weather

Your stylist has just finished coloring your beautiful shoulder length auburn hair, and you are ready for a night on the town with the cute guy you’ve been seeing.  As you reach up to feel its luster from your deep conditioner, one sight stops you dead in your tracks.  It’s the horrific crack on the middle of your otherwise perfectly painted fire-engine red nails.

A little too late, you realize that just like your hair, it is important it is to take care of your nails in all seasons.  Following are a few tips we suggest for taking care of your nails in the fall and winter months – a time when dry, cold conditions can wreak havoc on your nails.

  1. Consider your length: Consider adjusting your length during the winter months.  It is more difficult to keep super long nails in the winter months because they may snag in sweaters and other kinds of materials when it gets cold.  Perhaps winter would be a good time to cut your length back a bit.  Also, in order to keep the edges of your nails smooth, we recommend filing often, but never on the sides of your nails, as this can contribute to breakage.
  2. Eat for your nails: Just as eating the proper amounts of protein are essential to the development of a baby in utero, so are these ingredients beneficial to the development of healthy nails.  Be sure to eat foods high in protein and folic acid.  And when you do so, remember that you’re eating for the health of your hair, too.
  3. Use a good moisturizer: Dryness is the enemy of nails.  Be sure to use a product that will keep your hands and nails well moisturized, and apply the product to each finger and each nail.  We recommend making this a routine – perhaps when you apply lotion to your body after showering.
  4. Cover Up: A good way to protect your nails from the frightful elements outside is to wear gloves when it’s cold outside.  Not only is this a fashion statement, but if you put them on shortly after you have moisturized, it’s like having a beauty treatment on the go!  You should also consider using a good pair of household gloves when cleaning your home.
  5. Treat Water As the Enemy: In the cold months of the year, water can be a staunch enemy of healthy nails.  Avoid it as much as possible.  When you have finished washing dishes or shampooing your hair, do not let your hands air-dry.  Instead, be sure to dry them off thoroughly and moisturize.

And as you continue to apply these tips, remember: your beauty regimen is an investment.  Ultimately, just like your hair, the care you put into taking care of your nails will yield itself in one very positive result – the creation of a more fabulous you!
