Like many of you, we love summer – from the bright, carefree wardrobes and relaxed hairstyles to the long-awaited seaside vacations. What we don’t love is the frizz that comes with the constant heat and humidity. We found some of the best tips and tricks out there to keep frizz at bay and maintain a sleek, healthy look all summer long. For those of you immune to frizz, these probably aren’t the tips for you, but the rest of us need all the help we can get!
Condition, Condition, Condition
What awful feat of nature causes frizz in the first place? Dried out hair is porous, so any moisture in the air (say, on a humid summer night) gets absorbed into your hair strands, puffing them up and creating that frazzled appearance. Moisturizing conditioners, particularly intensive ones like Paul Mitchell’s The Conditioner™ Leave-in Moisturizer, help prevent this by adding a protective layer to the outside of the hair shaft that helps keep humidity out. This high-powered conditioner smoothes hair, reduces static and prevents dryness with moisture-balancing Hawaiian awapuhi.
Don’t skimp on conditioner or regular deep conditioning treatments while the weather is hot, but don’t over-shampoo either. Shampooing too frequently can strip your hair of natural oils that keep your hair healthy and moisturized.
Any type of friction can roughen up the hair cuticle, which contributes to frizz and fly-aways. This includes touching your hair too much, brushing it more than necessary or vigorously towel-drying hair. Instead, gently pat hair dry with a towel and style immediately, or let it air-dry the rest of the way so that strands lie flat.
Leave No Drop Behind
Walking out into humid weather with damp hair is a sure way to cause some serious frizz. If you’re going to blow dry your hair, make sure every section is completely dry. Perform your usual beauty routine in an air-conditioned space or next to a fan to prevent sweat from causing curls around your face and neck.
The Blow Dryer Matters
The type of blow dryer you pick is important too. Ionic dryers are designed to reduce frizz and static electricity, so they’re a good pick for women with curly or wavy hair. Make sure to pull sections tight with a rounded bristle brush and blow out strands from root to tip, working with the grain of your hair. Silicone-based hair serums reduce frizz by coating strands and locking out moisture. Apply Redken’s Shine Brilliance Glass 01 Smoothing Serum before drying to add shine and silky smoothness. The silicone formula even protects against heat damage from repeated blow outs.
Lightweight shine sprays and smoothing creams like Bed Head After Party can smooth down remaining fly-aways after drying and styling. Apply them sparingly to avoid weighing down hair or causing oily build-up.
