For Softer Hair, Don’t Hold The Mayo

Winter is approaching and the cold temperatures and low humidity are plotting to wreak havoc on your hair and skin. Sure you can slather on lotion (the best time is within 3 minutes of a shower or bath according to Dr. Lisa Benest, a dermatologist), apply conditioning hair products (such as It’s a 10! Miracle Hair Mask) or visit your local Hair Cutttery for a special treatment service tailored to your hair type. However, there is an interesting alternative.

According to www.lifehacker.com softer hair (and skin) can be had for the price of a jar of mayonnaise. Odd? Perhaps. But, as the article points out mayonnaise is “primarily made of eggs, oil, and water (plus a little lemon). Oil is commonly known to be good for dry anything. Eggs are also used to treat dry skin and dry hair. The water doesn’t matter much one way or the other and lemon juice can add shine to your hair. If you think about the benefits mayonnaise provides, you’re probably better off putting it on your head and body than actually eating it. (It is pretty fatty after all.)”

What is the recommended usage? Lifehacker says that “dry hair is remedied by combing in at least a tablespoon of mayonnaise and letting it hang out on your head for about an hour. After that you can wash it out with a mild shampoo and your hair should be considerably softer. When it comes to skin, rub a little on your rough patch and leave it for 10-15 minutes. When the timer dings, buff it out with a cloth and put your regular skin moisturizer on the area to lock in the softness.”

Why not give it a try? You’ll only be out a few dollars for the price of a jar of mayonnaise and you can always use the leftovers for the inevitable turkey sandwiches you’ll be eating during the holidays.

If the thought of slathering condiments on your body to enhance your personal appearance makes you squeamish, there are scores of alternative remedies/treatments you can turn to. Perhaps you’ve even tried some before? Share them with us!
