I’m not sure where people get their hair done before they meet me and I don’t really ask–it’s not my business. My business is to keep them coming back to me after they have sat in my chair for an amazing service. That’s the attitude I take with every client I get, I want to impress them with my skill and personality so they return to me. My job is to give you (the client) the best service I can and to be sure you’re satisfied with the work I do.
An interesting trend I’ve noticed with clients who are unhappy with previous stylist or salon is that they all seem to say the cut wasn’t “exactly” what they looking for. This doesn’t always mean they got a bad cut, it just wasn’t quite right. What this tells me is there was a breakdown in communication between the client and the stylist which usually results in”not exactly what I wanted.”
Now this is where I really start asking questions: What did you like? What didn’t you like? Does it move the way you want? Is it short enough? Is it long enough? How do you like to style it? How much time do you want to spend styling it? And so on. All these questions lead to other questions so I can give you exactly what you want. If I get the feeling we’re not quite on the same page I’ll pull out my Look Book. A Look Book is basically a scrapbook or binder filled with different cuts, styles, colors and LOOKS and it is a great tool to use to be sure that the client and I are both thinking the same thing. If we don’t communicate and figure out exactly what you (the client) wants then I’m going to have a tough time giving you what you want.
It’s OK to be picky and if you’re in my chair I actually want you to be picky. No joke, be as picky as you want, it’s the only way I’m going to give you what you want. If you have trouble describing what you want it’s always good to bring a picture. I’ve had clients bring pictures from magazines, the Internet, on their phones, actual photographs and in one case on a video camera because the style was from a commercial she had seen. If you have no picture then ask to look at some, every salon should have style books and if you’re in my chair I have my Look Book right there for you. I want you to tell me everything I need to know to perform a great service and I’m OK with you asking questions as I work. If we need to go slow and see what works then that is how we’ll do it. My job is customer service and you are the customer and I really do want you to be happy. If you’re happy then I am most definitely happy.
As a stylist, one of my favorite ways to get new clients is referrals because it tells me that I did so well that a client is willing to tell others about me. The thing I hear the most is “Susie Client and told me that you really listen and she always gets what she wants and is always happy.” I love this! And it isn’t just women, I have gotten a lot of referrals from guys as well because they like that I listen and give them what they want.
So please, whether you sit in my chair or another Hair Cuttery chair, be sure to talk to your stylist and tell them what you want. Make sure you get a great a consultation and feel confident you and the stylist both have the same result in mind. And if you find yourself in my chair, please, please, don’t be afraid to be picky, it’s the only way I can be sure you get what you want. It’s also the best way to be sure you come back to me and refer me to your friends and family. Use the salon locator on this page to find a Hair Cuttery salon near you.
